Ceanothus Trewithen Blue, also known as ‘Californian Lilac’ and holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. A large evergreen shrub with dark green, oval shaped, glossy leaves are formed along the gracefully arching branches which provide a stunning back-drop to its abundant clusters ( up to 12cms long ) of fragrant, deep blue flowers, highly prized by the butterflies and bees. Being salt tolerant it is also a suitable candidate for coastal planting, or in a sunny position against a wall or within a border.

Ceanothus Trewithen Blue is a cultivar of the Ceanothus Thyrsiflorus species which is native to coastal regions of California and Oregon. This specific cultivar ‘Trewithen Blue’ was raised by Trewithen Nurseries in Cornwall, England, UK in the early 20th century. The Nursery was renowned for its work in hybridising and introducing new plants to the gardening world. This Ceanothus  is known for its compact habit, deep blue flowers and glossy green leaves.

How to care for your Ceanothus Trewithen Blue

  1. Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. It will grow best in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
  2. Soil: The plant prefers well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. It can tolerate a wide range of soils including clay, but it will perform better in well-drained soil.
  3. Water: Is drought-tolerant once established and does not need frequent watering. Water it once a week during the first growing season to help it establish a deep root system. Once established, it should be able to survive on natural rainfall.
  4. Fertiliser: The plant does not require fertiliser, but if you want to give it a boost, you can feed it with a balanced fertiliser once a year in the early Spring.
  5. Pruning: Prune in the late Winter or early Spring to control its size and shape. It can be trimmed to the ground to rejuvenate the plant or to reduce its size.

By following these guidelines, your Ceanothus Trewithen Blue should thrive and provide a beautiful display of deep blue flowers.
