Callistemon Inferno, also known as ‘Bottlebrush’ is an unusual medium-sized evergreen shrub. It has clusters of red spiky flowers that appear from April through to June which look very similar to a duster, from which the species earned its nickname ‘Bottlebrush’. Due to its very warm heritage, it requires frost protection in colder winters, but is otherwise quite hardy.
How to care for your Callistemon Inferno
- Planting: Choose a sunny location in your garden with well-draining soil. Ensure that the soil is not waterlogged, as this can lead to root rot. If your soil is heavy clay, consider improving drainage by adding organic matter or creating a raised bed.
- Watering: Water the plant regularly during the first year after planting to help it establish a strong root system. Provide deep watering sessions to encourage deep root growth, but avoid overwatering, as this can be detrimental. Once established, this cultivar is relatively drought-tolerant, but during prolonged dry spells, make sure to provide adequate moisture to prevent stress.
- Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant, such as bark chips or compost. Mulching helps conserve moisture, suppress weed growth, and insulate the soil, providing a favorable environment for the roots. Ensure that the mulch does not touch the stems, as this can lead to rot.
- Pruning: Prune in early Spring before new growth begins. Start by removing any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. To maintain a compact shape or control its size, lightly prune the tips of the branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can reduce flowering. Regular pruning will also encourage bushier growth and promote a more abundant flower display.
- Fertilisation: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for flowering shrubs in early Spring, following the manufacturer’s instructions. This will provide the necessary nutrients to support healthy growth and abundant blooms. Avoid excessive fertilisation, as it can result in excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowering.
- Protection: It is generally hardy in the UK, but in regions with severe Winters, it may benefit from protection during cold spells.
