Arbutus Marina, also know as the ‘Strawberry Tree’, is a slow growing shrub or upright tree has reddish brown bark and glossy dark green leaves which are bronze in colour when young.  White flowers blushed with pink hang in large clusters in late Summer to Autumn, followed by yellow fruit which changes to red in colour.

How to care for your Arbutus Marina

  • Soil: This tree prefers well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. It can tolerate a wide range of soil types, including sandy, loamy, or clay soils.
  • Watering: It is drought-tolerant once established and only requires watering during prolonged periods of dryness. During the first few years of growth, water regularly to help establish the plant. After that, water only during periods of drought or prolonged dryness.
  • Sunlight: This tree prefers full sun to partial shade. It can tolerate some shade but may not flower as prolifically in shaded areas.
  • Fertiliser: Does not require regular fertilisation. If the tree appears to be struggling or has poor growth, a light application of a balanced fertiliser in the Spring can help promote healthy growth.
  • Pruning: This tree does not require pruning but can be pruned lightly in the Spring to shape it or remove any dead or diseased wood. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can cause the tree to produce excessive new growth at the expense of flowers and fruit.
  • Mulching: A layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree can help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid placing the mulch directly against the trunk, as this can promote fungal growth.

By following these simple care instructions, you can keep your Arbutus Marina healthy and thriving for many years to come.
