Acer Jordan, commonly known as Japanese Maple’ or ‘Full Moon Maple’, is an upright, hardy, deciduous tree that belongs to the family Sapindaceae. It is a cultivar of the Acer Shirasawanum, and is prized for its stunning foliage and compact size, making it a popular choice for small gardens and landscapes.

The tree typically grows to a height and spread of 4 metres. Its leaves are large and are deeply divided into 9 to 11 lobes and emerge in the Spring with a bright green colour that turns to a rich, reddish-orange in the Autumn, providing a spectacular show of Autumnal colour.

One of the most striking features of this Acer is its bark, which is smooth and grey, adding visual interest to the tree even in the Winter months. The tree also produces small, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers in the Spring, followed by winged samaras, or “helicopter seeds”, in the Autumn.

This is a relatively slow-growing tree that prefers a well-drained soil and partial shade to full sun. It is also tolerant of cold temperatures down to -20˚C.

Overall, this is an excellent choice for those looking for a small, ornamental tree with spectacular foliage and winter interest. Its compact size, stunning colours, and unique bark make it a standout in any garden or landscape.

How to care for your Acer Jordan

  • Soil: Plant in well-drained, acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. The soil should be kept moist but not waterlogged, as too much water can cause root rot.
  • Sunlight: This tree prefers partial shade to full sun. Plant it in a location that receives morning sun and afternoon shade, or filtered shade throughout the day.
  • Watering: During the first year after planting, water the tree deeply once a week. After that, water the tree deeply every two weeks during the growing season, or when the soil feels dry to the touch.
  • Fertiliser: Feed the tree with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in the Spring, just as new growth begins. Avoid fertilising in the Autumn, as it can stimulate new growth that may not have time to harden off before Winter.
  • Pruning: Prune the tree in late Winter or early Spring to remove any dead or damaged branches. You can also shape the tree at this time, if desired, by selectively removing branches to create an open, airy canopy.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture in the soil and prevent weeds from growing. Make sure the mulch is not piled up against the trunk of the tree, as this can cause bark rot.

By following these simple care tips, you can help your Acer Jordan thrive and provide years of beauty and enjoyment in your garden or landscape.
