The Acer Sango-Kaku also known as the ‘Coral Bark maple’, and a recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, makes a superb slow growing, large garden shrub or small deciduous tree, suitable within the border planting scheme, or specimen within the lawned area, and equally happy as a container plant for the patio. Widely known for its stunning bark colouring, the coral pink of the new growth in Spring, to a much brighter, vibrant coral pink-red during the Winter months. New deeply lobed pinkish-green leaves emerge in Spring, changing to bright green in Summer then a golden yellow with hints of red towards the Autumn. In addition to these stunning features tiny purple-red flowers appear during the Spring followed by red winged fruits.
Looking After Your Acer Palmatum Sango-Kaku
Generally pest and disease free, Acer Sango-Kaku is an easy to grow small ornamental garden tree or large shrub and suitable in many if not all locations, from cottage planting schemes to town gardens and coastal areas. A low maintenance plant which can benefit from full sun or a partial shaded area within the garden, preferring a rich acid to neutral, moist but well drained soil. in Spring place a good layer of garden mulch around the base of the plant to help retain some moisture during the drier Summer months, along with a good quality multi-purpose fertilizer to encourage strong, healthy new growth in the coming season. Little if any pruning is required, although the removal of any damaged or unwanted branches should be done late Winter/ early Spring whilst still in the dormant season.
