Acer Davidii, commonly known as the ‘Snake-bark Maple’, is a small deciduous tree belonging to the Sapindaceae family. It is native to China, where it can be found growing in mountainous regions at elevations of up to 3,000 meters. The tree is named after the French missionary and naturalist Armand David, who discovered it in China in the late 19th century.

This Acer has an upright, spreading habit and can grow higher than 12 metres in height, although it is usually smaller in cultivation and has a spread of more than 8 metres. The bark of the tree is one of its most striking features, with greenish-grey to brownish-grey bark that is patterned with vertical stripes of green or white, resembling the skin of a snake. The leaves are opposite and palmately lobed, with three to five lobes that are sharply toothed. They are a glossy, dark green colour in Summer, turning shades of yellow, orange, and red in the Autumn.

This is a relatively easy tree to grow and is tolerant of a range of soils and conditions. It prefers a moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, but can also tolerate full sun. The tree is hardy down to -15˚C and can be grown in a variety of settings, including as a specimen tree or in mixed borders.

In summary, this is relatively easy to grow and can be used in a variety of settings, making it a popular ornamental tree.

How to care for your Acer Davidii

  • Location: Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. It is best to plant it in a location that is protected from strong winds.
  • Watering: Requires regular watering during the growing season, especially during hot and dry weather. Water deeply and thoroughly, making sure the soil around the tree is evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Fertiliser: Benefits from regular fertilisation during the growing season to promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates.
  • Pruning: Requires little pruning, but any dead, damaged, or diseased branches should be removed promptly. Pruning should be done in late Winter or early Spring before new growth emerges.
  • Mulching: Applying a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree will help to conserve moisture, suppress weed growth, and regulate soil temperature. Use a layer of mulch but keep it away from the trunk to prevent moisture buildup.

By following these care tips, you can ensure that your Acer Davidii stays healthy and attractive for years to come.
