Forsythia Lynwood, also known as ‘Forsythia’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a beautiful and popular cultivar of the Forsythia family. This deciduous shrub is known for its bright yellow flowers that bloom in early Spring, before the leaves emerge. The Lynwood variety is particularly known for its large, showy flowers and its compact, upright growth habit. This Forsythia cultivar can reach a height of 3 metres, making it a great addition to any landscape.  If planted in groups, it makes a colourful bush or hedge.

The history of Forsythia dates back to the early 18th century when Scottish botanist, William Forsyth, discovered the plant in China. He brought it back to Europe and it quickly became a popular ornamental plant for its beautiful, early Spring blooms. The Lynwood variety was developed in the 1940s and is considered to be one of the most popular cultivars of Forsythia.

How to care for your Forsythia Lynwood

  1. Planting: Prefers full sun to partial shade, and well-drained soil. It can tolerate a wide range of soil types, but prefers slightly acidic soil. When planting, make sure to space the shrubs about 4-6 feet apart to allow for proper growth and air circulation.
  2. Watering: Once established, it is drought-tolerant and does not require regular watering. However, during the first growing season, make sure to keep the soil consistently moist to help the plant establish a strong root system.
  3. Pruning: It is a low maintenance plant and does not require regular pruning. However, if you want to keep the shape of the plant or control its size, you can prune it back in late Winter or early Spring. To prune, cut back the longest stems to just above a pair of healthy buds.
  4. Fertilisation : It does not require regular fertilisation, but you can provide a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early Spring to promote healthy growth.
  5. Temperature: It is hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to -15˚C.

By following these care tips, your Forsythia Lynwood will thrive and provide beautiful, bright yellow flowers in the early Spring.
