Agapanthus Streamline, commonly known as ‘African Lily’ is a striking and elegant perennial plant celebrated for its tall, slender flower stalks adorned with clusters of delicate, trumpet-shaped blooms. This cultivar, part of the Agapanthus genus in the Amaryllidaceae family, stands out with its sleek, upright growth habit and the dramatic vertical accents it brings to garden landscapes. The plant typically reaches heights of 0.5 metre, producing robust flower spikes that can soar even higher, showcasing a profusion of flowers that bloom sequentially from early to late Summer.

The flowers are a vision in shades of sky blue, creating a soothing and tranquil atmosphere wherever they are planted. Each flower cluster consists of numerous individual blooms, each with a delicate texture and a subtle trumpet shape that adds grace and charm to the garden. These blooms are not only visually captivating but also attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, contributing to the garden’s ecological diversity.

The foliage is equally appealing, forming dense clumps of strap-like leaves that remain evergreen in milder climates. The deep green leaves provide a lush backdrop to the flowers, enhancing their visual impact and ensuring year-round interest. This evergreen quality makes a versatile choice for both formal garden borders and informal garden beds, where it adds structure and elegance.

With its graceful form, vibrant blooms, and enduring foliage, this Agapanthus is a superb choice for gardeners seeking a perennial plant that offers both beauty and resilience, effortlessly enhancing the landscape with its enduring charm.

How to care for your Agapanthus Streamline

  • Planting: Prefers well-drained soil, so make sure to plant it in a location with good drainage. If your soil is heavy or clay-based, amend it with organic matter to improve drainage. Plant in a sunny location, preferably in the morning sun.
  • Watering: Requires moderate watering. Water it deeply once or twice a week, depending on the weather conditions. During hot weather, you may need to water it more often, but be careful not to overwater it. Avoid watering the foliage, as this can lead to fungal diseases.
  • Fertilising: Benefits from regular feeding. Apply a balanced fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season. Use a fertiliser high in potassium to promote flower production.
  • Pruning: Deadhead the spent flowers to encourage new blooms. Cut the flower stalks down to the base of the plant once they have finished blooming. In the Autumn, cut back the foliage to about 15cm above the ground.
  • Winter care: It is frost-tender, so protect it from freezing temperatures. In colder climates, dig up the bulbs and store them in a cool, dry place until Spring. In milder climates, mulch the plant with a layer of compost or straw to protect the roots from freezing.

By following these simple care tips, you can enjoy the beauty of Agapanthus Streamline in your garden for many years to come.
