Vitex Agnus Castus or ‘Chaste Tree’ is an attractive, deciduous shrub, preferring a warm sunny spot in the garden, its five to seven lobbed dark green leaves, up to 10cm long, are slightly toothed and produce a wonderful aroma when crushed. Early to mid Autumn the fragrant lilac-blue often white flowers appear on terminal panicles up to 18cm long, at the ends of the current years growth.
Vitex Agnus Castus has a long history of use in traditional medicine. Native to the Mediterranean region and southern Europe, it was used by ancient Greeks to aid with gynecological issues. By the Middle Ages, it had gained popularity among monastic communities for its purported ability to promote chastity. Today, it is used for various health benefits and research continues on the potential of Vitex Agnus Castus to support overall health and wellness.
