Viburnum Cassinoides, commonly known as the ‘Appalachian tea tree’, is a deciduous shrub that belongs to the Viburnaceae family.  While not as well-known as some other Viburnum species, it possesses unique qualities that make it an appealing addition to gardens.

This variety graces landscapes with its elegant, multi-seasonal display. During the Spring, the shrub adorns itself with clusters of flat-topped, creamy white flowers, creating a delicate and picturesque scene. These blossoms not only contribute to the plant’s aesthetic charm but also attract pollinators like bees and butterflies.

As the seasons progresses it transitions to lush green foliage, with serrated, ovate leaves that adds texture to the garden. One of the plant’s standout features occurs in the Autumn when the leaves undergo a spectacular transformation, turning shades of red, purple, and burgundy. This vibrant display adds a burst of colour to the landscape, enhancing the overall visual appeal.

It then produces green berries that turn from pink to red to blue to black in Autumn, sometimes with two or more colours displaying in the same cluster, which persist into the Winter months. These berries not only serve as an additional ornamental element but also provide a food source for birds, contributing to the biodiversity of the garden.

Adaptable to various soil types, this Viburnum thrives in partial shade to full sun, making it suitable for a range of garden settings. Typically reaching heights of 2.5 metres, this deciduous shrub offers a moderate size that allows for easy integration into different garden designs.

How to care for your Viburnum Cassinoides

  • Sunlight: Plant in a location that receives partial to full sun.  It can tolerate a variety of light conditions, but generally prefers some shade, especially in hotter climates.
  • Watering: Prefers moist, well drained soil, so it is important to keep the soil evenly moist but not water logged. Water deeply once a week, or more often during periods of hot, dry weather.
  • Fertilising: The shrub does not require a lot of fertilisation, but it can benefit from a light feeding of a balanced fertiliser in early Spring before new growth appears.
  • Pruning: Prune as and when needed to maintain its desired shape and size. Pruning is best done after flowering in late Spring or early Summer.  Remove any dead or damaged branches to promote overall plant health.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

By following these care guidelines, you can promote the health and vitality of your Viburnum Cassinoides, ensuring a beautiful and thriving addition to your garden.
