Verbena Bonariensisis, or often referred to as ‘Purple Top’, a recipient of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, makes an elegant, upright, open, clump forming perennial with toothed, oblong, lance shaped leaves, along tall, stiff, branching stems.  From mid-Summer fragrant lavender to rose purple flowers are formed in tight clusters and last through until Autumn.  An excellent pollinator, attracting butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects to the garden, in addition to providing useful height and colour to the herbaceous border. Quite spectacular when planted in groups along the herbaceous border.

Looking After Your Verbena Bonariensis

This must be one of the easiest of perennials to grow and most spectacular to view, adaptable for growing in many if not all locations. A low maintenance perennial which will benefit from a sunny aspect in all types of garden, from cottage planting schemes to courtyard or coastal gardens, Verbena Bonariensis will tolerate most soils, but must be well drained. During the colder Winter months provide a good layer of dry mulch around it’s base to protect the root system from any hard frosts, and dead head or leave to self seed during the following growing season. Cut back the old growth in Spring once the new growth starts to show, and provide a generous feed of a good quality fertiliser to encourage fresh new growth in the coming season.
