Ulex Flore Plena or Gorse, a recipient of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit is a very hardy evergreen, dense, upright, rounded shrub, often found in coastal areas, its tiny grooved spiny leaves are produced along the very spiny green stems, used as a hedge this makes an ideal deterent from any unwanted visitors to the garden. From early spring, double, coconut scented, yellow pea-like flowers are produced in abundance, creating a wonderfully colourful focal point, these are later followed towards Autumn by black seed pods. Suitable for coastal planting, and frequently used as low hedge.

Looking After Your Ulex Flore Plena

Generally pest and disease free, an easy to grow evergreen Spring flowering shrub in many if not all locations. A low maintenance compact plant which can benefit from a sunny area in all types of garden from cottage planting schemes to town or coastal areas. Ulex Flore Plena will tolerate most soils as well as being both drought and salt tolerant. Generally pruning is only required every two – three years, although any pruning required to remove damaged or unwanted branches to maintain shape or prevent overcrowding is best achieved after flowering, when the addition of a good multi purpose fertilizer will encourage strong fresh new growth during the main growing season.
