Thuja Orientalis Aurea Nana, also known as ‘Dwarf Golden Oriental Thuja’ and holder of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a slow-growing evergreen shrub that belongs to the Cupressaceae family. It is a dwarf variety of the Thuja Orientalis species and is native to Eastern Asia. The plant is highly valued for its striking golden-yellow foliage that adds colour and texture to the garden throughout the year.

The plant typically grows to a height and spread of 1 metre.  Its growth habit is compact and pyramidal, with a broad base that gradually tapers towards the top. The foliage is dense and bushy, with overlapping, scale-like leaves that form flattened sprays. The leaves are a bright golden-yellow colour that intensifies in full sun, adding a vibrant splash of colour to the garden.

This is a relatively low-maintenance plant that is easy to grow and care for. It prefers a moist, well-draining soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. The plant can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. It also prefers a full sun to partial shade exposure, but it can tolerate some shade.

Overall, this is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to add a splash of gold to their garden. Its compact size and striking foliage make it ideal for small gardens or container planting, and its low-maintenance nature makes it an excellent choice for beginners.

How to care for your Thuja Orientalis Aurea Nana

  • Soil: Prefers a moist, well-draining soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. It can tolerate a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. However, the soil should not be waterlogged, as this can cause root rot.
  • Watering: This plant requires moderate watering, especially during hot and dry periods. Water deeply once or twice a week, depending on the weather conditions. Make sure the soil is moist but not waterlogged.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade exposure. It thrives in full sun, which intensifies its golden-yellow colour. However, it can tolerate some shade, especially in hot climates.
  • Fertiliser: This plant does not require frequent fertilisation. You can apply a slow-release fertiliser in Spring to encourage growth. Avoid fertilising in late Summer or Autumn, as this can stimulate new growth that is susceptible to Winter damage.
  • Pruning: Does not require much pruning. However, you can trim back the branches in late Winter or early Spring to maintain its shape and size. Avoid pruning more than one-third of the plant’s height at a time, as this can stress the plant.
  • Mulching: Mulching can help retain moisture in the soil and suppress weeds. Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or leaves, around the base of the plant.

By following these care tips, you can help ensure that your Thuja Orientalis Aurea Nana remains healthy and vibrant, providing a stunning splash of gold to your garden.
