Thalictrum Delavayi Ankum, commonly known as ‘Chinese Meadow Rue’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a striking and elegant perennial plant, known for its airy, delicate appearance and charming blooms. This cultivar typically grows to a height of 2.5 metres with a spread of about 1/2 metre, making it a graceful addition to mixed borders or woodland gardens.
The plant features finely divided, fern-like foliage that is a soft, bluish-green, adding a light and feathery texture to the garden. In the Summer it produces tall, slender stems topped with clusters of small, nodding, lavender-purple flowers. Each flower consists of numerous, delicate, thread-like petals surrounding bright yellow stamens, creating a cloud-like effect.
How to care for your Thalictrum Delavayi Ankum
- Light: This plant prefers a partially shaded location, although it can tolerate full sun if provided with adequate moisture.
- Soil: Prefers moist, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. It can also tolerate slightly acidic to neutral soil pH levels.
- Water: Regular watering is essential for this plant. Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
- Fertiliser: Doesn’t require heavy fertilisation, but a light application of a balanced fertiliser in the Spring can help promote healthy growth.
- Pruning: Cut back the stems to the ground in late Autumn or early Spring to promote healthy growth in the coming season and prevent the plant from becoming too leggy.
- Mulch: Applying a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant can help retain moisture in the soil and suppress weed growth.
- Propagation: Can be propagated by dividing established clumps in the Spring or Autumn. Alternatively, you can sow seeds in the Autumn or early Spring for new plants.
By following these care tips, you can ensure that your Thalictrum Delavayi Ankum thrives and adds beauty and interest to your garden.
