Taxus Fastigiata, also known as the ‘Irish Yew’ or ‘Columnar Yew’ and holder of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit is an evergreen conifer that is native to Western Europe, particularly Britain and Ireland and is known for its narrow, upright growth habit and dark green needles.

Taxus Fastigiata is valued for its ornamental and ecological value. It is tolerant of different soil types and conditions and can be used as a hedge, topiary, or as an accent in gardens. It is also great for creating privacy screens and windbreaks. This tree can live for several hundred years and is tolerant of pruning, making it a great choice for topiary and hedging.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was introduced to North America, where it quickly became a popular ornamental plant for landscaping, particularly for its columnar shape which makes it ideal for narrow spaces and as a hedge.

How to care for your Taxus Fastigiata

  1. Planting: Prefers well-drained, acidic soil in partial to full shade.
  2. Watering: Taxus fastigiata is relatively drought-tolerant once established, but it is important to water the tree regularly during its first growing season to help it become established. In general, it is a good idea to water the tree once a week if there is no significant rainfall.
  3. Pruning: Prune in late Winter or early Spring, before new growth appears. This will help to maintain the tree’s shape and encourage healthy new growth.
  4. Fertilising: This conifer does not require heavy fertilisation to thrive. A balanced, slow-release fertiliser applied in the Spring will be sufficient to keep the tree healthy and vigorous.
