Sycoparrotia Semidecidua, also known as the ‘Semi-deciduous Parrot Tree’, is a species of tropical tree that is native to Central and South America. The tree can grow up to 30-40 meters tall and has a broad, spreading crown with dark green leaves. The trunk of the tree is thick and buttressed, with smooth, grey-brown bark. The tree is known for its large, showy flowers that are typically bright red, orange, or yellow in colour and are produced in large clusters. These flowers are highly attractive to parrots and other birds, giving the tree its common name. The tree also produces large, fleshy fruits that are edible and are often used in local cuisine.

This variety is a valuable species for its timber.  It is considered a hardwood and is used in construction, furniture, and other wood products.  The tree can tolerate a wide range of soil types and climates, although it prefers well-drained, sandy soils and a tropical or subtropical climate. Its wood is durable and resistant to decay, making it a good option for outdoor use. The tree is also known for its medicinal properties and is used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments.

How to care for your Sycoparrotia Semidecidua

  • Location and Sunlight:  Choose a planting location that receives partial to full sunlight. Morning sun and dappled shade are ideal, especially in hot and arid climates. Protect from strong winds, as its delicate foliage can be susceptible to damage.
  • Soil:  Provide well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Amend heavy clay soil with organic matter to improve drainage.  Ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during the growing season. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture.
  • Watering:  Water the shrub regularly, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.  Check the soil moisture level by inserting your finger into the soil about an inch deep. Water when the top inch feels dry.
  • Pruning:  Prune in late Winter or early Spring before new growth emerges.  Remove dead, diseased, or damaged branches to maintain the shrub’s health and appearance.  Lightly shape the shrub to maintain its natural form and encourage dense growth.
  • Fertilisation:  Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early Spring, just as new growth begins.  Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for dosage and application method.
  • Winter Protection:  In colder climates, provide Winter protection by applying a layer of mulch around the base of the shrub and covering it with burlap or a frost cloth.  This helps prevent winter desiccation and protects against extreme cold temperatures.
  • Propagation:  Propagate through hardwood cuttings in late Autumn or Winter. Use rooting hormone to enhance success rates.
