This drought-tolerant grass is low maintenance and easy to care for, making it a great choice for both residential and commercial properties. With its delicate, ponytail-like plumes it adds visual interest to gardens, borders, and mixed perennial beds with the fine-textured foliage of this Stipa creating a natural and graceful look in any outdoor space.

Stipa Pony Tails is native to the Southwestern United States and Mexico and is a warm-season grass that has been used for centuries by indigenous people for food and medicinal purposes. It was first described in 1835 by German botanist Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck. It was introduced to Europe in the late 1800s and has been used in gardens and landscaping since the early 20th century.

How to care for your Stipa Pony Tails

  1. Plant in well drained soil in full sun
  2. Water well once a week during the first growing season to establish a strong root system
  3. Once established this grass is drought tolerant and will only need watering in prolonged dry spells
  4. Fertilise once a year in Spring with a slow release fertiliser
  5. Cut the old foliage down to the ground in late Winter or early Spring before new growth emerges
  6. Leave the seed heads on in the Autumn as food for the birds, or you can cut them off if you prefer a tidier look.
