Solidago Golden Baby, commonly known as ‘Goldenrod’  is a perennial herbaceous plant that belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is a compact, clump-forming plant that typically grows to a height and spread of 1 metre.

The leaves of this Solidago are lance-shaped and toothed, with a bright green colour. They are arranged alternately along the stems and have a slightly rough texture.  It produces numerous small, bright yellow flowers that bloom in late Summer and early Autumn. The flowers are held on upright stems and are arranged in dense, flat-topped clusters at the top of the plant.  These flowers are attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a valuable plant for wildlife gardens.

This is a versatile plant that can be used in a variety of settings, including borders, rock gardens, and container plantings. It is also well-suited for mass plantings and can be used as a ground cover.

Overall, this is a hardy, attractive plant that can add colour and interest to a wide range of garden settings.

How to care for your Solidago Golden Baby

  • Sunlight: This plant loves to bask in full sunlight. So, make sure that you place it in a spot that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day.
  • Watering: The plant prefers moist soil but not waterlogged. Ensure the soil is well-draining to avoid waterlogging. Water the plant regularly during hot, dry weather to prevent it from drying out. Water the plant at the base, so as not to wet the leaves and flowers.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If the soil is heavy or clay-like, consider adding some compost or other organic matter to improve drainage and fertility.
  • Fertiliser: You can fertilise with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early Spring when new growth emerges. Avoid over-fertilising as this can lead to excessive growth and a less attractive appearance.
  • Pruning: Deadheading the flowers encourages the plant to produce more blooms. Prune the plant in the Spring by cutting back the stems to about half their length. This will help to promote bushier growth and prevent the plant from becoming too leggy.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your Solidago Golden Baby thrives and provides you with beautiful golden flowers throughout the growing season.
