Sidalcea is a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae. They are commonly called ‘Checkerbloom’ or ‘Prairie Mallow’. They are native to western North America, from British Columbia to California, with the greatest diversity in California. The genus includes both annual and perennial species and are known for their showy flowers. They were primarily used by native people for medicinal purposes. They have been used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments, including headaches, colds, and skin conditions.  In horticulture, they are grown as ornamental plants and some species are popular in wildflower gardens.
