Sedum Bertram Anderson, also known as ‘Stonecrop’ and holder of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit,  is a cultivar of Sedum Spurium, a low-growing, mat-forming perennial succulent that is native to parts of Europe and Asia. It is a popular plant for rock gardens, ground covers, and border edging due to its ease of care and attractive appearance.

It typically grows to a height and spread of 50 cm and features small, succulent, round or oval-shaped leaves that are arranged in opposite pairs along the stems. The leaves are typically a deep burgundy or bronze colour, which intensifies in cooler temperatures and full sun exposure. In the Summer, it produces clusters of small, star-shaped, rosey red flowers that bloom atop stems that rise above the foliage. The flowers attract butterflies and other pollinators to the garden.

This Sedum variety is known for its toughness and ability to thrive in a range of conditions. It is drought-tolerant, making it ideal for rock gardens or areas with infrequent watering. It prefers full sun and can adapt to various soil types, from sandy to clay. It is also resistant to deer, rabbits, and most pests and diseases.

How to care for your Sedum Bertram Anderson

  • Watering: It is drought-tolerant and does not require frequent watering. However, during prolonged dry periods, you may need to water it to keep the soil moist.
  • Soil: This plant prefers well-drained soil, but can tolerate a range of soil types. It can also grow in poor or rocky soils.
  • Fertilizing: This plant does not require regular fertilisation. However, you can apply a balanced fertiliser in the Spring to promote healthy growth.
  • Pruning: You can prune back the stems in the Spring to encourage bushier growth. You can also deadhead the spent flower heads to promote additional blooms.
  • Winter care: This plant is hardy and can withstand Winter temperatures in most regions. However, in colder climates, it may benefit from a layer of mulch to protect the roots.

Overall, this is a versatile and attractive plant that adds interest and colour to the garden. With its low maintenance requirements and adaptability to a range of growing conditions, it is a great choice for both novice and experienced gardeners.
