Rodgersia Bronze Peacock, also known as just ‘Rodgersia’ is a compact, clump forming perennial plant that is highly prized for its attractive foliage and striking flowers. This plant is a member of the Saxifragaceae family and is native to the moist woodlands of East Asia. It is named for its beautiful, bronze coloured leaves that are reminiscent of peacock feathers.

The leaves are large, palmate, and deeply lobed, measuring up to 30 cm in diameter. They emerge in early spring as bronze coloured buds and unfurl into striking leaves with a glossy, metallic sheen. The leaf colour will darken as the season progresses, eventually turning to a deep green colour by summer.

In early Summer, it produces tall, upright stems that can reach up to 1m in height. At the top of these stems, large, pyramid-shaped clusters of pinkish-red flowers will emerge. These flowers are very showy and are attractive to bees and other pollinators. The flowers will continue to bloom for several weeks, adding a beautiful pop of colour to the garden.

Rodgersia Bronze Peacock prefers a partially shaded location in the garden and requires consistently moist, well-drained soil. It can tolerate some sun but prefers cooler temperatures and will wilt in hot, dry conditions. This plant is a slow grower and will take several years to reach its full size. However, once established, it is a low-maintenance plant that is relatively disease and pest-free.

Overall, this is a stunning plant that is sure to make a statement in any garden. Its unique foliage and striking flowers make it a great choice for gardeners who are looking to add some drama and interest to their landscape.

How to care for your Rodgersia Bronze Peacock

  • Plant in the right location: Prefers a partially shaded location in the garden. It can tolerate some sun, but too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves. It also requires consistently moist, well-drained soil.
  • Water regularly: Requires consistently moist soil to thrive. During the growing season, water the plant deeply once or twice a week to keep the soil consistently moist. In hot, dry weather, you may need to water more frequently.
  • Fertilise sparingly: Does not require a lot of fertiliser. Apply a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in early Spring, and again in mid-Summer if necessary. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive growth and weakened stems.
  • Prune as needed: Remove any dead or damaged leaves and stems as they appear. If the plant becomes too large, you can cut it back in late Autumn or early Spring. This will help to rejuvenate the plant and promote healthy growth.
  • Mulch around the plant: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Be sure to keep the mulch away from the stems to prevent rot.

By following these simple care tips, you can enjoy the beauty of Rodgersia Bronze Peacock in your garden for years to come.
