Ribes Gordonianum, commonly known as ‘Gordon’s Currant’ or ‘Beatonii’, is a deciduous shrub that is a hybrid between Ribes Odoratum and Ribes Sanguineum. This delightful shrub inherits the best traits of its parent species, combining the fragrant blooms of Ribes Odoratum with the colourful flowers of Ribes Sanguineum.

This variety typically grows to a height and spread of 1.5 – 2.5 metres, forming an attractive rounded shape with arching branches. The foliage consists of small, lobed leaves that emerge in a fresh green hue in spring and transition to yellow-green or reddish hues in Autumn before dropping for the Winter.

In early Spring it bursts into a profusion of pendulous clusters of flowers, each bearing tubular blooms in shades of pink to reddish-orange. These blossoms are not only visually striking but also emit a sweet and spicy fragrance, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies to the garden.

This hybrid shrub is adaptable to a wide range of soil types and environmental conditions, thriving in full sun to partial shade. It is relatively low-maintenance and tolerant of occasional drought once established, making it suitable for mixed borders and woodland gardens.

With its charming combination of fragrant blooms and colourful foliage, Ribes Gordonianum adds beauty and interest to the landscape throughout the growing season, making it a prized addition to gardens, parks, and wildlife habitats.

How to care for your Ribes Gordonanium

  • Soil: Prefers well-draining soil, but can grow in a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sand.
  • Water: The shrub should be watered regularly, especially during dry periods. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Sun: Prefers full sun to partial shade, but can tolerate full shade.
  • Pruning: The shrub can be pruned in late Winter or early Spring to maintain its size and shape. Remove any dead or diseased branches, as well as any branches that are crossing or rubbing against each other.
  • Fertiliser: It does not typically require fertiliser. However, if the plant is not growing well, a balanced fertiliser can be applied in early Spring.
  • Propagation: It can be propagated by taking cuttings in the Summer.

In summary, this is a low-maintenance shrub that can thrive in a variety of conditions and with proper care can flourish for years to come.
