Rheum Ace of Hearts, commonly known as ‘Rhubarb’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is grown for its ornamental value. Unlike other varieties of Rhubarb that are primarily grown for their edible stems, this variety is grown for its large, heart-shaped leaves and striking red stems.

It is a perennial that belongs to the Polygonaceae family and is native to Siberia. It can grow up to 1.5 metres in height and 1 metre in width, with leaves that can reach up to 60 cm in length and 45 cm in width. The leaves are thick and leathery, with a glossy surface and a deep green colour that contrasts beautifully with the bright red stems.

The stems of Rheum Ace of Hearts emerge in early Spring and grow quickly, reaching up to 90 cm in length. They are thick and fleshy, with a crisp texture and a tangy flavour that is similar to traditional rhubarb. In early Summer, pale pink flower spikes rise from the clumps.

Rheum Ace of Hearts is a hardy plant that can tolerate a range of growing conditions. It prefers moist, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter, and it will benefit from regular watering during dry spells. The plant can grow in full sun or partial shade, although it will produce larger leaves and stems in a sunny location.

This is a beautiful and easy-to-grow plant that can add interest and colour to any garden. Its large, heart-shaped leaves and bright red stems make it a stunning focal point in a mixed border or as a container plant on a patio or balcony.

How to care for your Rheum Ace of Hearts

  • Soil: Prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. You can amend your soil with compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage.
  • Watering: The plant likes consistently moist soil, but it does not like to sit in waterlogged soil. Water deeply once a week, and adjust your watering schedule based on weather conditions.
  • Sunlight: Grows best in full sun to partial shade. In hot summer climates, it may benefit from some afternoon shade to avoid scorching of the leaves.
  • Fertilising: You can apply a balanced fertiliser in early Spring to encourage healthy growth. Avoid fertilising the plant later in the season, as this can promote soft growth that is more susceptible to damage from pests and diseases.
  • Pruning: You can prune throughout the growing season to remove any dead or damaged leaves or stems. Cut the stems close to the ground, and be sure to use clean, sharp pruners to avoid damaging the plant.
  • Mulching: Applying a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant can help to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Overall, Rheum Ace of Hearts is a relatively low-maintenance plant that can add beauty and interest to your landscape. With proper care and attention, it should thrive for many years to come.
