Pyracantha Saphyr Yellow, commonly known as ‘Firethorn’ is a bushy evergreen shrub with an upright tree like habit. It bears oblong, dark to mid green, glossy leaves, with clusters forming in May of small white flowers with pale yellow centres. The Pyracantha Saphyr Yellow gets its name by producing these most wonderful, long lasting, bright yellow berries. A good reason to grow this Pyracantha in your garden is that it will brighten up any area when other plants could be dull and out of season. A great specimen for a hedge or a free standing shrub, also being virtually disease free.
How to care for your Pyracantha Saphyr Yellow
- Planting: Grows best in full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. Choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. When planting, make sure to dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball and position the plant so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting.
- Watering: During the first year after planting, water regularly to establish a deep, healthy root system. After that, the plant is fairly drought-tolerant and may only need watering during extended dry periods. Avoid over-watering, as this can lead to root rot.
- Fertilising: Does not require regular fertilisation, but you can apply a slow-release fertiliser in early Spring if desired. Be careful not to over-fertilise, as this can result in excessive growth and reduced berry production.
- Pruning: Prune in late Winter or early Spring to remove any dead, damaged, or diseased wood, as well as any unwanted growth. Wear gloves and protective clothing, as the plant’s thorns can be sharp. You can also prune to shape the plant or control its size, but be careful not to remove too much wood, as this can reduce berry production.
- Mulching: Applying a layer of mulch around the base of the plant can help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
By following these care tips, your Pyracantha Saphyr Yellow should thrive and provide you with a beautiful display of berries each year.
