Chaenomeles Speciosa Apple Blossom, commonly known as ‘Flowering Quince’ is a medium sized deciduous spiny shrub of spreading habit.  It has bowl shaped, white tinged pink flowers appearing in Spring which add an early splash of colour before its glossy dark green leaves are formed.  When the flowers fade, the aromatic green fruits begin to emerge, turning a golden yellow as they mature in Autumn.  Although very bitter when eaten raw, they are delicious when cooked especially in making preserves and jellies.  These shrubs are often trained against a fence or wall, or used as an early flowering hedge.  Its spiny, dense branches providing a useful deterrent to any unwanted visitors to the garden.

Looking After Your Chaenomeles Speciosa Apple Blossom

Generally pest and disease free, an easy to grow shrub in many if not all locations. A low maintenance plant which can benefit from a sunny or partially shaded area in all types of garden from the cottage planting scheme to town or court-yard gardens. Plant in a fertile, moist but well drained soil, applying a good quality general purpose fertiliser early Spring to promote strong, fresh new growth in the coming season. Any light pruning should be done after flowering, but any hard pruning to remove any damaged or over crowded branches should be done in the Winter months during the dormant season.
