Agave Americana Variegata, also known as the ‘Variegated Century Plant’ and a recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a striking and distinctive perennial succulent that is sure to add a touch of drama to any garden. This variety of Agave Americana features striking variegated leaves with white and green stripes, making it a unique and beautiful addition to any outdoor space. The Agave Americana Variegata is a low-maintenance plant that will need frost protection in the Winter but is easy to grow and care for, making it a great choice for gardeners of all skill levels. It is perfect for planting in rock gardens, cactus gardens, or as a standalone feature.

Agave Americana is a species of agave native to Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States. It is also known as “Century Plant” because it’s known to live up to 25-30 years and produces a flower spike only once in its lifetime, before dying. The variegated cultivar of this plant, Agave Americana Variegata, is a man-made variety that is developed by horticulturists.

How to care for your Agave Americana Variegata

  • Choose the right location: Prefers a sunny and warm location. It is best to choose a spot that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. If you are growing your plant indoors, place it near a south-facing window where it can get plenty of light.
  • Water sparingly: It is a succulent, which means it can store water in its leaves. As a result, it does not need to be watered frequently. In fact, overwatering can cause the roots to rot. Water your plant sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely before watering again. In the Summer months, you may need to water your plant more often than in the Winter.
  • Use well-draining soil: It prefers soil that is well-draining and sandy. You can purchase a cactus or succulent mix at your local garden centre, or create your own mix by combining equal parts sand, perlite, and potting soil.
  • Fertilise occasionally: Does not require a lot of fertiliser, but you can give it a boost by fertilising it once or twice a year with a balanced fertiliser.
  • Protect from frost: It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from freezing temperatures. If you are growing your plant outdoors, consider covering it with a frost cloth or moving it indoors during the Winter months.

By following these tips, you can care for your Agave Americana Variegata and enjoy its beauty for years to come.
