Phormium Yellow Wave, also known as ‘New Zealand Flax’ and holder of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit is a striking evergreen perennial plant that is native to New Zealand. It is known for its bright yellow, sword-shaped leaves that give the plant a bold and vibrant appearance. The leaves are long and narrow, and can reach up to 1.5 metres in length. The plant itself can grow up to 4 metres tall and 2.5 metres wide, making it a great choice for adding a tropical touch to any garden.
The plant is drought-tolerant and can thrive in a variety of soil types, making it a great choice for low-maintenance landscaping. It is also salt-tolerant, making it a great choice for coastal gardens.
Phormium Yellow Wave is a great choice for adding a touch of colour to a garden. It can be used as a focal point in a garden bed, or planted in mass to create a striking visual effect. It is also a great choice for container gardening, and can be used as a privacy hedge or screen.
In terms of care, the plant prefers full sun to partial shade, and should be watered regularly during the growing season. It is also important to fertilise the plant regularly to promote healthy growth. Pruning is not necessary, but if needed, it should be done in the spring.
Looking After Your Phormium Yellow Wave
Generally disease free, a low maintenance and easy to grow evergreen garden perennial in many if not all locations, from the informal cottage style planting schemes to the more formal town/city or coastal gardens, preferring a sunny or partially shaded area of the garden away from any very cold and drying Winter winds, an ideal plant for the sunny border adding both height and colour. A moist, well drained, fertile soil will ensure you have a healthy and happy perennial. Very little if any pruning required, although do remove any dead or damaged leaves during late Spring. Mulch with a well rotted garden compost to help retain any moisture during the drier Summer months and apply a good quality general purpose fertiliser to stimulate plenty of fresh new growth.
