Phormium Tenax Purpureum, also known as New Zealand Flax, holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is an evergreen, clump forming perennial which can provide year round interest to the garden. The sword-like arching foliage foliage of this Phormium is a dark purple colour making this an ideal structural plant within the border adding both height and colour. During long hot Summers the more mature specimen will produce panicles of tubular shaped red flowers on tall flower spikes towering above the boldly coloured foliage.

Looking After Your Phorium Tenax Purpureum

Generally disease free, a low maintenance and easy to grow evergreen garden perennial in many if not all locations, from the informal cottage planting schemes to the more formal town/city or coastal gardens, preferring a sunny or partially shaded area of the garden away from any very cold, and drying winds, an ideal plant for the sunny border adding both height and colour. A moist, well drained and fertile soil will ensure you have a healthy and happy perennial. Very little pruning required, but do remove any dead or damaged leaves late Spring. Mulch with a well rotted garden compost to help retain moisture during the drier Summer months and apply a good quality general purpose fertiliser to help stimulate plenty of fresh new growth.
