Paeonia Karl Rosenfield, commonly known as ‘Peony’ is a popular herbaceous perennial known for its large, showy flowers and vibrant, deep red colour. It typically grows to a height and spread of 1 metre and its foliage consists of dark green, deeply lobed leaves that provide an attractive backdrop for the stunning blooms.

The flowers of Paeonia Karl Rosenfield are the standout feature of this plant. They are very large and have an impressive double form with numerous ruffled petals. The colour is a deep, velvety red, which is striking against the dark green foliage. The blooms have a sweet, spicy fragrance that is highly attractive to pollinators.  It typically blooms in late Spring or early Summer, depending on the climate and growing conditions. The flowering period usually lasts for 1-2 weeks.

This Peony prefers full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. It is relatively drought tolerant once established but will benefit from regular watering during dry spells. It is a popular choice for flower gardens, borders, and as a cut flower. Its vibrant colour and large, showy blooms make it a standout feature in any garden. The blooms are also prized by florists for use in bouquets and arrangements.

How to care for your Paeonia Karl Rosenfield

  • Planting: Choose a location with well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade. Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball, and deep enough to plant at the same depth it was in its container.
  • Watering: Prefers consistently moist soil but does not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Water deeply once a week during dry spells, and avoid overhead watering, which can promote the development of fungal diseases.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in the Spring as new growth begins. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as shredded leaves or bark, around the base of the plant to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms as soon as they fade to encourage the plant to produce more flowers. Cut back the entire plant to the ground in the Autumn after the foliage has died back. This will help prevent the development of fungal diseases and promote healthy growth in the spring.

By following these tips, you can help your Paeonia Karl Rosenfield thrive and produce beautiful blooms year after year.
