Miscanthus Cosmopolitan, also known as ‘Eulalia’ and a holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit is an ornamental grass that adds a touch of elegance and grace to any landscape. This cultivar, part of the Miscanthus genus, is celebrated for its striking appearance and versatility, making it a popular choice among garden enthusiasts and landscapers. Its name, ‘Cosmopolitan,’ reflects its widespread appeal and adaptability.

The most prominent feature of this variety is its finely textured foliage, which forms dense, arching clumps. The leaves are variegated with an exquisite combination of creamy-white and deep green stripes. This variegation lends an air of sophistication to the plant and adds a bright, eye-catching contrast to its surroundings.

As the growing season progresses it produces feathery, plume-like flower heads that rise gracefully above the foliage. These silvery-pink plumes sway gently in the breeze, creating a mesmerising, almost ethereal effect that persists throughout Autumn. The combination of its striking foliage and delicate, airy plumes makes it an exceptional choice for adding drama and visual interest to gardens and landscapes.

One of the remarkable qualities of this ornamental grass is its adaptability to various growing conditions. It is known for its ability to thrive in a range of soil types and tolerate both sun and partial shade, making it a versatile addition to many different garden designs. It typically reaches a height of around 1.5 – 2.5m, and its upright, clumping habit gives it a stately presence in the garden.

Whether used as a focal point in a landscape, a backdrop for other plants, or to create privacy screening, this stands out as an elegant and stylish addition to gardens and borders.  With its stunning variegated foliage and gracefully swaying plumes, this grass adds a touch of refined beauty to any outdoor space and brings a touch of the cosmopolitan to your garden.

How to care for your Miscanthus Cosmopolitan

Planting Location:  Choose a well-drained location in your garden. It can tolerate a range of soil types but prefers soil that doesn’t stay excessively wet.

Sunlight:  Plant in an area that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day for the best growth and coloration of its variegated leaves.

Watering:  Water regularly, especially during the first growing season to help establish its root system. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant and can thrive with less frequent watering. Water deeply when you do water, allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering sessions.

Mulching:  Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. This can also protect the roots during extreme temperatures.

Pruning:  In late Winter or early Spring, trim back the previous year’s growth to within a few inches of the ground. This rejuvenates the plant and encourages fresh new growth. Remove any dead or damaged foliage at this time as well.

Fertilisation:  Typically doesn’t require heavy feeding. You can apply a slow-release, balanced fertiliSer in the Spring if your soil lacks nutrients. Avoid over-fertiliSation, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of plume development.

Dividing:  Every few years, consider dividing the clumps to maintain the plant’s health and vigoUr. Divide in early Spring before new growth emerges, using a sharp shovel to separate the root ball into smaller sections, then replant the divisions.

Maintenance:   Regularly remove dead or unsightly foliage throughout the growing season to keep the plant looking its best.

This is a versatile and resilient ornamental grass that can enhance the visual appeal of your garden with minimal effort. By following these care instructions, you can enjoy its striking variegated foliage and delicate plumes year after year.
