Milium Effusum Aureum, commonly known as ‘Bowles’s Golden Grass’ and a holder of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a compact and low-growing semi-evergreen grass that belongs to the Poaceae family.   The leaves of this grass are narrow and bright yellow, with a shiny and smooth texture. They grow in a loose, open arrangement that gives the plant a light and airy appearance.

In early Summer, the Milium Effusum Aureum produces delicate and slender flower stems that rise above the foliage. These stems are topped with a cluster of tiny, yellow flowers that mature into small, brown seed heads by late Summer. The flowers are not particularly showy and are often overlooked, but they add to the overall charm of the plant.

This grass is easy to grow and care for, making it a popular choice for gardeners of all levels of experience. It is a versatile plant that can be used in many different ways in the landscape. It is often planted in borders, rock gardens, or as a ground cover under taller plants. Its bright colour and airy texture make it an excellent accent plant that can be used to add a pop of colour and visual interest to any garden or landscape. It can also be used in container gardens, where its low-growing habit and bright colour make it a great complement to other plants.

How to care for your Milium Effusum Aureum

  • Water: This grass can tolerate dry conditions, but it will benefit from occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. It is important not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot and other problems. Allow the soil to dry out slightly before watering again.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, consider adding some compost or other organic material to improve drainage and fertility.
  • Fertiliser: This grass doesn’t require a lot of fertiliser. You can apply a slow-release fertiliser in the Spring, or a liquid fertiliser every few weeks during the growing season. Be careful not to over fertilise, as this can lead to excessive growth and weaker stems.
  • Pruning: Doesn’t require pruning, but you can remove dead or damaged stems and foliage as needed. In late Winter or early Spring, you can cut back the old stems to the base to encourage fresh growth.
  • Winter care: This grass is fully hardy and can survive winter temperatures as low as <-20°C . It will go dormant in the Winter, and you can leave the dead foliage in place to protect the roots from frost. In the Spring, you can remove the old foliage to make way for new growth.
  • Propagation: Can be propagated by division in the Spring or Autumn. Simply dig up the clump and separate the individual plants, making sure that each division has some roots and foliage. Replant the divisions in well-draining soil and water thoroughly.

By following these care tips, you can enjoy the beauty and low-maintenance nature of Milium Effusum Aureum in your garden or landscape.
