Magnolia Royal Star , also known as ‘Star Magnolia’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a deciduous flowering tree that is a popular ornamental plant in gardens and landscapes and is a member of the Magnoliaceae family.

The Royal Star variety is known for its large, showy, and fragrant flowers that bloom in early spring before the leaves appear. The flowers are typically white with a hint of pink, and have a diameter of up to 15cm. The tree typically grows to a height of 4 metres and has a spread of the same.

Magnolia Royal Star is a slow-growing tree that prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun or partial shade. It is generally hardy and can tolerate cold temperatures down to approximately -20˚C.

In addition to its beautiful flowers, it also has attractive foliage. The leaves are a dark green colour and are large and glossy, creating a lush canopy that provides shade and shelter for birds and other wildlife.

Overall, Magnolia Royal Star is a stunning and low-maintenance tree that can add beauty and charm to any garden or landscape. Its vibrant flowers and foliage make it a popular choice among gardeners, and its hardiness and adaptability ensure that it will continue to thrive for years to come.

How to care for your Magnolia Royal Star

  • Planting: Choose a planting location that has well-draining soil, and is in a spot that receives full or partial sun. Dig a hole that is about twice the size of the root ball of the tree and ensure that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
  • Watering: Young trees require regular watering to help establish strong roots. Water the tree deeply once a week, and increase the frequency during periods of hot, dry weather.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early Spring and again in late Summer to promote healthy growth and flowering. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the proper application rate.
  • Pruning: Prune in late Winter or early Spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged or diseased branches. Thin out any branches that are crossing or rubbing against each other to promote good air circulation and sunlight penetration. Avoid heavy pruning as this can cause stress to the tree and affect its flowering.
  • Mulching: Add a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Use organic mulch such as shredded bark or leaves, and ensure that the mulch is not in direct contact with the trunk of the tree.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your Magnolia Royal Star tree thrives and produces beautiful flowers for many years to come.
