Magnolia Leonard Messel holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit is a deciduous large shrub or small tree of rounded habit.  From early Spring, fragrant deep pink, tinged with white star shaped flowers appear from purple buds before its mid-dark green leaves are formed.   An eye catching specimen early Spring for the shrub border, or for use as a small tree within the lawned area.

Looking after Your Magnolia Leonard Messel

Generally pest and disease free, an easy to grow deciduous Spring flowering large shrub or small tree. A low maintenance plant which will benefit from a sunny position in all types of garden from the informal cottage planting scheme to the more formal town or courtyard gardens.   Plant in a well drained neutral to acid soil, once planted apply a generous mulch of well rotted garden compost around the base, this will help to retain some moisture during the drier Summer months.
