Laurus Nobilis, commonly known as the ‘Bay Tree, is a species of evergreen tree or shrub native to the Mediterranean region. With a rich history dating back to ancient Greece and Rome, it has long been prized for its fragrant, aromatic leaves that are used as a culinary herb and for their beauty. The plant is a slow grower, but once established, it can reach heights of up to 12 metres. It is also highly valued for its ornamental qualities, and its dark green, glossy leaves make it a popular addition to gardens, landscapes, and indoor spaces.  Small clusters of pale yellow flowers are produced during early Summer which are followed by glossy black fruits.

With its rich history and versatility as both a culinary and ornamental plant, this Laurus is a valuable addition to any garden or indoor space. Whether used as a fragrant herb in the kitchen or as a stunning, evergreen accent in the landscape, this plant is sure to bring both beauty and fragrance to any setting.

How to care for your Laurus Nobilis

  • Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade and will do best in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
  • Soil: The plant prefers well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If your soil is heavy or poorly drained, consider amending it with compost or other organic matter.
  • Water: Water regularly, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil evenly moist. Be careful not to over-water the plant, as it does not tolerate wet soil.
  • Fertilisation: Does not require regular fertilisation, but you can feed it with a balanced fertiliser once or twice a year if you want to promote healthy growth.
  • Pruning: Prune as needed to keep its shape and encourage new growth. Prune the plant in the Spring, removing any dead or damaged wood, and shaping the plant as desired.

By following these simple care tips, your Laurus nobilis will thrive and provide an attractive and fragrant addition to your garden for many years to come.
