Iris Chrysographes, also known as the ‘Black Iris’, is a stunning and highly sought-after species of Iris that is prized for its striking black/purple flowers and elegant form. This plant is native to the Himalayan region of Asia, where it has been prized for centuries for its beauty and rarity.

Iris Chrysographes is a herbaceous perennial that grows to a height and spread of 1/2 metre. This plant is best known for its large, ruffled flowers that are purple black in colour,  the foliage is also attractive, with green leaves that are narrow and sword-like in shape.

How to care for your Iris Chrysographes

  • Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade, but it can tolerate some shade.
  • Water: This Iris prefers consistently moist soil, but it is important to avoid standing water, which can lead to root rot. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, and be sure to let the soil dry out a bit between waterings.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. If the soil is heavy or poorly-draining, consider amending it with compost or other organic matter.
  • Fertilisation: Fertilisation is not necessary, but if you want to encourage growth, you can feed it with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once a year.
  • Pruning: After the Iris has finished blooming, you can cut back the foliage to about 15 centimetres tall. This will help to prevent the buildup of any disease that might be present in the leaves.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that your Iris Chrysographes thrives in your garden. With its beautiful, black-purple blooms, this Iris is sure to add beauty to your landscape.
