Indigofera Potaninii, commonly known as ‘Potanin’s Indigo’, is a charming deciduous shrub renowned for its delicate foliage and vibrant floral display. This species typically reaches a height of 2.5 metres  and has a spreading habit that makes it an attractive addition to garden borders, mixed shrub beds, or as a focal point in a landscape design.

The shrub is noted for its graceful, finely pinnate leaves that have a soft, fern-like appearance and provide a subtle backdrop to its vibrant floral show. In late Spring to early Summer, it produces clusters of small, pea-like flowers that range in colour from soft to pink to red. These blooms are not only visually striking but also attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

How to care for your Indigofera Potaninii

  • Planting Location:  Choose a location with full sun to partial shade. This shrub thrives in bright light, which promotes its best growth and flowering.  Plant in well-drained soil. It is adaptable to a range of soil types, but it prefers loamy or sandy soils. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
  • Watering:  Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid water logging.  Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant. Water during prolonged dry spells, especially during hot weather, to keep the plant healthy and promote flowering.
  • Fertilising: Fertilise in early Spring before new growth begins and again in mid-summer if needed.  Use a balanced, slow-release fertiliser or one formulated for flowering shrubs. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive leaf growth and reduced flowering.
  • Pruning:  Prune in late Winter or early Spring before new growth starts. This helps shape the shrub and encourages new growth.  Remove any dead, damaged, or weak branches. Lightly trim the plant to maintain its shape and improve air circulation. Regular pruning also helps promote better flowering.
  • Mulching:  Apply a 2 to 3-inch layer of organic mulch around the base of the shrub in Spring. This helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

By following these care guidelines, Indigofera Potaninii will continue to thrive and provide its lovely, delicate flowers and attractive foliage, enhancing the beauty of your garden throughout the growing season.
