Illicium Henryi, commonly known as ‘Chinese Anise’, is an evergreen shrub or tree native to China. It typically grows to about 8 metres tall and features dense, glossy, lance-shaped leaves that emit a subtle anise-like fragrance when crushed. In late Spring to early Summer, it produces showy, star-shaped, red/rose coloured flowers with multiple petals and a striking, symmetrical appearance. These blooms are often followed by star-like seed capsules, although they are not edible, unlike the closely related Illicium verum (star anise).
This species thrives in partially shaded, well-drained environments, preferring acidic soils. Due to its ornamental value and attractive foliage it is often used in gardens as a decorative shrub or hedge. Its evergreen nature and aromatic properties make it a popular choice in temperate regions for adding texture and colour year-round.
How to care for your Illicium Henryi
Light Requirements: Thrives best in partial shade. While it can tolerate full sun, too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, so it’s ideal to plant it where it receives filtered sunlight or morning sun with afternoon shade.
Soil Requirements : It prefers acidic to slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5) for optimal growth. Make sure the soil is well-drained, as it does not like waterlogged conditions.Enrich the soil with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to retain moisture and provide nutrients.
Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.
Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in Spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Excessive fertilisation can lead to weak growth, so it’s important to follow package instructions and fertilise moderately.
Pruning: Pruning is generally not required, but you can shape the plant or remove dead or damaged branches in late Winter or early Spring. If grown as a hedge, light pruning can help maintain its shape and compact form.
Winter Care: In colder climates, apply a thicker layer of mulch around the roots to protect them from freezing. If severe frost is expected, consider covering the plant with horticultural fleece to prevent damage.
With regular watering, appropriate light, and basic care, Illicium Henryi will thrive, providing beautiful flowers and aromatic foliage in your garden.
