Hibiscus Marina, also known as the ‘Rose of Sharon’ and holder of he prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a deciduous shrub admired for its stunning, vibrant blue to lavender flowers. This Hibiscus variety typically grows to a height of 2.5 metres, with a similar spread, forming an upright, bushy habit. The foliage consists of deep green, serrated leaves that provide an excellent backdrop for the large, showy blooms.

The flowers are its standout feature.  Each bloom has a striking, funnel-shaped structure with a darker central eye, creating a beautiful contrast that draws attention in any garden setting. The flowering period is long, usually from mid Summer to early Autumn, making it a great choice for extended seasonal colour.

This variety thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, and it’s relatively low-maintenance once established. It is often used as a focal point in garden borders, as a specimen plant, or in containers on patios and decks. Its tropical appearance adds a touch of exotic beauty to landscapes, while its hardiness makes it suitable for a variety of climates.

How to care for your Hibiscus Marina

  • Light: This plant prefers full sun to partial shade, but avoid direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.
  • Water: Requires regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, but also make sure not to overwater the plant, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Soil: This plant prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. If your soil is heavy or poorly draining, consider adding compost or other organic matter to improve its quality.
  • Fertiliser: Benefits from regular feeding with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser. Fertilise the plant once a month during the growing season and once every six weeks during the dormant season.
  • Pruning: Regular pruning is important to encourage healthy growth and to maintain the plant’s shape. Cut back dead or damaged stems in the spring, and prune back the tips of the plant to control its size.

Whether you are an experienced gardener or just starting out, Hibiscus Marina is a must-have plant for your garden. With its large, vibrant flowers and lush green foliage, this plant is sure to bring a touch of beauty and elegance to any outdoor space.
