Hebe Franciscana Variegata, commonly known as ‘Hebe Silver Queen’ and holder of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit,  is a compact, evergreen shrub species belonging to the Plantaginaceae family. This plant is native to New Zealand and has a history of use in landscaping as a low-maintenance ground cover or accent plant. This Hebe is known for its variegated foliage, featuring green leaves with white edges, and its ability to thrive in a variety of growing conditions, making it a popular choice for gardeners. The shrub can reach a mature height and spread of 2 metres and produces tiny lilac flowers in the Summer. Its leaves are a striking combination of green and white, providing year-round interest and adding a unique touch to gardens.  This shrub is easy to care for, requiring minimal maintenance and being drought-tolerant once established.

How to care for your Hebe Franciscana Variegata

  • Planting: Choose a location with well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade. Plant the shrub in the Spring or Autumn, allowing for proper root establishment.
  • Watering: Water regularly after planting and during dry spells, but avoid overwatering as this can lead to root rot. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and does not require frequent watering.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining soil and tolerates a variety of soil types, from sandy to clay.
  • Pruning: Prune as needed to maintain its shape and promote healthy growth. Trim back any straggly or overgrown branches in late Winter or early Spring.
  • Fertilising: Fertilise the shrub in early Spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser.
  • Winter Protection: In colder climates, provide a layer of mulch around the base of the shrub to protect its roots from frost.

By following these care instructions, you can ensure that your Hebe Franciscana Variegata thrives and continues to add colour and interest to your garden for years to come.
