Genista Porlock, also known as ‘Broom Porlock’ and holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a medium sized semi evergreen shrub. This plant is known for its stunning display of bright yellow flowers that bloom in the late spring and early Summer. The flowers are followed by seed pods that persist into the Autumn, adding to the plant’s ornamental appeal.

Genista Porlock has a moderate growth rate and can reach up to 2.5 metres tall and wide. The plant is able to tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, making it a great choice for gardeners of all skill levels.

In the history, Genista Porlock was used as a traditional medicine by the ancient people of the UK. Its roots and bark were used to make a tea that was believed to have medicinal properties. The plant was also commonly used as a source of fuel and for making brooms.

How to care for your Genista Porlock

  1. Planting: When planting, it is best to choose a location that has well-drained soil and full sun. The plant should get at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.
  2. Watering: Once the plant is established, it is drought-tolerant and only needs to be watered when the soil is dry. However, it is important to water it well after planting to help it become established.
  3. Fertilising: It does not require regular fertilisation, but if the plant is not producing as many flowers as usual, a balanced fertiliser can be applied.
  4. Pruning: The plant can be pruned to shape and control size, and it is best to prune it right after it finishes blooming.
  5. Overwintering: It is frost hardy down to -5˚C, so it will need protection in the Winter.  It’s a good idea to mulch the base of the plant to protect it from the cold.

By following these simple care tips, your Genista Porlock should continue to thrive and provide you with beautiful yellow flowers for many years to come.
