Fuchsia Riccartonii, also known as the ‘Hardy Fuchsia’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit,  is a beautiful and unique plant that is native to New Zealand. It was first discovered in 1868 by Scottish botanist, William Colenso, and named after the Riccarton Bush Reserve where it was found.

This plant is known for its large, drooping clusters of pink and purple flowers that bloom throughout the Summer and Autumn. The leaves are glossy green and have a slightly curved shape. Fuchsia Riccartonii is a hardy upright bushy shrub and can reach up to 2-3 metres in height.  A very versatile fuchsia, suitable for hedging and coastal planting.

How to care for your Fuchsia Riccartonii

  1. Light: Prefers partial to full shade, with protection from direct sunlight.
  2. Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.
  3. Temperature: It can tolerate temperatures as low as -20°C.
  4. Soil: It prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Use a mixture of peat moss and perlite for optimal drainage.
  5. Fertiliser: It benefits from regular fertilisation during the growing season. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every two to four weeks.
  6. Pruning: Prune Fuchsia Riccartonii regularly to encourage bushier growth and prevent legginess. Pinch back the tips of the stems to promote branching.

Fuchsia Riccartonii is a beautiful and unique plant that can add colour and interest to any garden. With proper care, it will thrive and provide many seasons of beautiful blooms.
