Fatshedera Annemieke, also known as the ‘Tree Ivy’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit,  is a unique and beautiful evergreen shrub.  It is a perfect choice for gardeners looking for a low-maintenance, yet visually striking addition to their garden.

The Fatshedera Annemieke is an average growing plant that can reach up to 1.5 metres in height and width. It features large, glossy leaves that are green in colour with creamy white margins. The leaves are held on sturdy, woody stems. In the late Autumn to early Winter, it produces small greenish-white flowers that are followed by small black berries. The flowers are not particularly showy, but they are an attractive feature of the plant.

This is a versatile plant that can be grown in a wide range of conditions. It can be grown in full sun to partial shade, and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is also drought tolerant and does not require regular watering. It can also be grown in a container or in the ground, making it a great choice for gardeners with limited space.

This variety is a relatively new cultivar and was first introduced by a Dutch nurseryman in the late 1990s. This plant is particularly popular in Europe, but it is slowly gaining popularity in the United States as well.

How to care for your Fatshedera Annemieke

  1. Light: This plant can tolerate a wide range of lighting conditions, from full sun to partial shade. It prefers bright, indirect light.
  2. Watering: It is drought tolerant and does not require regular watering. Allow the soil to dry out slightly before watering. Be careful not to overwater as it can lead to root rot.
  3. Soil: This plant prefers well-drained soil. Use a potting mix that is high in organic matter.
  4. Temperature: It is hardy down to -5˚C so will need protection in colder temperatures.
  5. Fertiliser: Fertilise once a month during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser.
  6. Pruning: Does not require regular pruning, but if you wish to control its size or shape, prune it back in late Winter or early Spring.
  7. Overwintering: As this plant is not frost tolerant, it is best to bring it indoors or provide protection during the Winter.

By following these guidelines, you will ensure that your Fatshedera Annemieke will thrive and bring beauty to your garden for many years to come.
