Eucryphia Nymansay, also known as ‘Brush Bush’ and a holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit,  is a cultivar of Eucryphia Nymansensis, a rare evergreen tree native to the cool temperate rainforests of southern Chile and Argentina. This cultivar is known for its striking, dark green leaves and large clusters of white, fragrant flowers. It is a unique and beautiful ornamental plant for gardens and landscapes.

The tree can grow up to 15 metres tall, with a dense canopy and a straight trunk. The flowers, which bloom in late Summer and early Autumn, are a favourite of bees and other pollinators. The Nymansay cultivar is particularly known for its large, showy blooms and dark green foliage, which make it a standout in any garden setting.

This cultivar was discovered at Nymans Gardens in West Sussex, England in the early 20th century. It was introduced by the famous plant hunters and gardeners, the Beales family and was first introduced to the UK horticultural trade in the 1920s. The Nymansay eucryphia quickly became a popular plant in the British Isles and it’s still appreciated today for its beauty and rarity.

How to care for your Eucryphia Nymansay

  • Planting: When planting, choose a location with well-drained soil and full sun.
  • Watering: Prefers consistent moisture and should be watered regularly, especially during the first few years after planting. However, it’s important to avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged.
  • Fertilisation: Benefits from regular fertilisation during the growing season, with a balanced slow-release fertiliser or a balanced liquid fertiliser. Fertilise in early Spring and again in mid-Summer.
  • Pruning: It can be pruned to shape it and remove any dead or damaged branches. Prune in late Winter or early Spring before new growth appears.
  • Winter protection: It is hardy to -10˚C, so it’s important to protect it from really heavy frost and cold winds. Cover the tree with burlap or other protective material if temperatures are expected to drop below freezing.

With proper care and attention, the Eucryphia Nymansay will thrive and provide years of enjoyment.
