Eucryphia Cordifolia x Lucida, also known as ‘Ulmo’, is an evergreen, broad columnar large shrub or tree that is a cross between Eucryphia Cordifolia and Eucryphia Lucida. This tree is known for its dull green leaves that have a downy grey underside and its fragrant white, cup-shaped flowers that bloom from the Summer into Autumn. The tree can grow higher than 12 metres and up to 8 metres wide and is often used as an ornamental tree in gardens, parks, and along streets.
This variety is a relatively new hybrid tree, first created in the early 20th century as a result of the crossbreeding two species of Eucryphia, both of which are native to Chile and Argentina.
The tree is suitable for cool climates and can tolerate temperatures as low as -10˚C. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and full sun to partial shade. It is also drought-tolerant once established.
How to care for your Eucryphia Cordifolia x Lucida
- Planting: Prefers full sun and well-drained soils. When planting, make sure to dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball and amend the soil with compost or other organic matter. Water the tree well after planting.
- Watering: It is drought-tolerant, but it’s still important to water it regularly during its first growing season to help it establish a strong root system. Once established, the tree can tolerate dry periods. Water the tree deeply but infrequently to encourage deep rooting.
- Fertilising: It does not require regular fertilisation, but if the leaves start to yellow or the growth is stunted, you can apply a balanced fertiliser to the base of the tree in early Spring.
- Pruning: It does not require frequent pruning, but you can trim away any dead or damaged branches as needed. It is best to prune this tree during the dormant season, late Winter or early Spring.
- Winter care: It is hardy in cool climates and can tolerate temperatures as low as -10˚C. If you live in an area where temperatures drop below this, it is best to protect the tree with a thick layer of mulch or burlap wrap.
With proper care, the Eucryphia Cordifolia x Lucida will thrive and provide you with large white flowers and a lovely fragrance for many years to come.
