Drimys Winteri, also known as ‘Winter’s Bark’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the cool temperate regions of southern South America. This tree is known for its glossy, dark green leaves that are fragrant when crushed and its small, creamy white flowers that bloom in the Spring.
In terms of history, this Drimys has been used by the indigenous people of Chile and Argentina for centuries for medicinal and culinary purposes. The bark of the tree was used to make a tea to treat a variety of ailments, including stomach complaints, fever and headaches.
This tree is perfect for use as a specimen plant, or as a focal point in the garden. It can reach higher than 12 metres in height and more than 8 metres in width. The tree is also tolerant of a wide range of soil types, but prefers well-draining soil and is drought tolerant once established. It can thrive in full sun to partial shade.
How to care for your Drimys Winteri
- Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. It can tolerate full shade but will have fewer flowers and the leaves will be less vibrant.
- Water: This tree is relatively drought-tolerant once established. However, it should be watered regularly during the first growing season to help it establish a deep root system. Once established, it is best to let the soil dry out a bit before watering again. Avoid over-watering, as this can lead to root rot.
- Soil: It is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, but prefers well-draining soil.
- Fertiliser: Fertilise in the Spring with a slow-release fertiliser or compost.
- Pruning: Prune in late Winter or early Spring before new growth appears. Prune to shape or remove any damaged or diseased branches.
- Cold hardiness: It is tolerant of cold temperatures, it can tolerate temperatures as low as -10°C so will need protection in colder climates.
With proper care and attention your Drimys Winteri will thrive and add a beautiful touch to any landscape for many years to come.
