Drimys Lanceolata, also known as ‘Mountain Pepper’, is a hardy evergreen shrub that is native to the cool temperate regions of southern Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. This plant is known for its glossy, dark aromatic green leaves, and its small pale yellow/white flowers that bloom in the Spring.

In terms of history, this Drimys has been used by Indigenous Australians for centuries for medicinal and culinary purposes. The leaves and bark of the plant were used to treat a variety of ailments, including stomach complaints and headaches.

This shrub is perfect for use as a specimen plant, hedge or screen. It can reach up to 4 metres in height and 2.5 metres in width. The plant is also tolerant of a wide range of soil types, but prefers well-draining soil and is drought tolerant once established.

How to care for your Drimys Lanceolata

  • Light: Prefers partial shade and a sheltered position.
  • Water: This plant is relatively drought-tolerant once established. However, it should be watered regularly during the first growing season to help it establish a deep root system. Once established, it is best to let the soil dry out a bit before watering again. Avoid over-watering, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Soil: It is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, but prefers well-draining soil.
  • Fertiliser: Fertilise in the Spring with a slow-release fertiliser or compost.
  • Pruning: Prune in late Winter or early Spring before new growth appears. Prune to shape or remove any damaged or diseased branches.
  • Cold hardiness: It is tolerant of temperatures as low as -10°C so will need protection in colder climates.

With proper care and attention your Drimys Lanceolata will thrive and add a beautiful touch to any landscape for many years to come.
