Digitalis Spice Island, also known as ‘Foxglove’ is a cultivar of the popular foxglove plant, known for its tall spikes of bell-shaped flowers in shades of apricot and orange. This particular variety was first introduced by UK-based breeder T&M (Thompson and Morgan) and it is becoming increasingly popular among gardeners for its unique colour and long blooming period.
The history of Digitalis ‘Spice Island’ can be traced back to the early 2000s when T&M (Thompson and Morgan), a UK-based seed company, first introduced it as a new cultivar. It is a hybrid between Digitalis Purpurea and Digitalis Parviflora.
Digitalis ‘Spice Island’ is a biennial or short-lived perennial plant that can reach up to 1 metre in height. The flowers are apricot and orange, and they bloom in late Spring to early Summer. The plant’s green leaves are lanceolate, providing a nice contrast to the bright flowers.
How to care for your Digitalis Spice Island
- Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. It is best to plant the Digitalis in a location that receives morning sun and afternoon shade.
- Water: Prefers moist soil, but it can tolerate periods of dryness. Water the plant regularly and make sure the soil does not dry out completely.
- Fertiliser: Does not require a lot of fertiliser, but it can benefit from a slow-release fertiliser applied once a month during the growing season.
- Pruning: Does not require frequent pruning, but it can be pruned to shape and control its size. Prune the plant after it flowers, and avoid pruning in fall or winter.
- Soil: Prefers a well-drained, moist soil. If your soil is heavy clay or sandy, amend it with organic matter to improve drainage.
- Temperature: It is fully hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to < -20°C.
By following these care tips, you can ensure that your Digitalis Spice Island thrives and remains healthy for many years to come.
