Decumaria Sinensis, commonly known as ‘Climbing Hydrangea’, is a graceful and versatile deciduous vine prized for its lush foliage, delicate flowers, and adaptability to various growing conditions. Belonging to the Hydrangeaceae family, it is native to woodland areas of the southeastern United States, where it thrives in the dappled shade of forests and along stream banks.

The most distinctive feature of Decumaria is its glossy, deep green leaves, which are oval-shaped and arranged opposite each other along the stems. In Autumn, the foliage often transforms into shades of bronze or burgundy, adding a touch of warmth to the landscape before dropping in Winter.

In late Spring to early Summer, it produces clusters of tiny, fragrant, creamy-white flowers that appear in terminal panicles. These delicate blooms attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, adding movement and life to the garden.

This vine is well-suited for a variety of landscape applications. It can be trained to climb walls, fences, or trellises, where its twining stems create a lush green backdrop or a soft screen for privacy. Alternatively, it can be allowed to sprawl across the ground as a ground cover, particularly in shaded areas where grass struggles to grow.

With its attractive foliage, fragrant flowers, and adaptability to various growing conditions, Decumaria Barbara is a valuable addition to woodland gardens, shaded borders, or naturalised landscapes, where it adds beauty, texture, and interest throughout the seasons.

How to care for your Decumaria Sinensis

  • Sunlight: Plant in a location that receives partial to full shade. While it can tolerate some sun, it prefers dappled shade or filtered sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the day.
  • Soil: Ensure the soil is moist, well-draining, and rich in organic matter. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil but can adapt to a range of soil types, including loamy or sandy soils.
  • Watering: Water the vine regularly, especially during the growing season and dry spells. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulching around the base of the plant can help retain soil moisture.
  • Fertilisation: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in Spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for dosage and application instructions.
  • Pruning: Prune as needed to control growth and shape the vine. Remove any dead, damaged, or overgrown stems, cutting back to healthy growth points. Pruning can be done in late Winter or early Spring before new growth emerges.
  • Support: Provide support for the vine to climb if desired, such as trellises, arbors, or fences. It twines naturally but may need assistance to establish its climbing habit.
  • Protection from Frost: In colder climates, protect from frost damage by covering it with a frost cloth or providing additional insulation around the base of the plant. Mulching can also help protect the roots from freezing temperatures.

By following these care guidelines, you can ensure that your Decumaria Barbara remains healthy, vigorous, and a beautiful addition to your garden, providing beauty, texture, and interest throughout the seasons.
