Decumaria Sinensis, commonly known as ‘Climbing Hydrangea’, is a graceful and versatile deciduous vine prized for its lush foliage, delicate flowers, and adaptability to various growing conditions. Belonging to the Hydrangeaceae family, it is native to woodland areas of the southeastern United States, where it thrives in the dappled shade of forests and along stream banks.
The most distinctive feature of Decumaria is its glossy, deep green leaves, which are oval-shaped and arranged opposite each other along the stems. In Autumn, the foliage often transforms into shades of bronze or burgundy, adding a touch of warmth to the landscape before dropping in Winter.
In late Spring to early Summer, it produces clusters of tiny, fragrant, creamy-white flowers that appear in terminal panicles. These delicate blooms attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, adding movement and life to the garden.
This vine is well-suited for a variety of landscape applications. It can be trained to climb walls, fences, or trellises, where its twining stems create a lush green backdrop or a soft screen for privacy. Alternatively, it can be allowed to sprawl across the ground as a ground cover, particularly in shaded areas where grass struggles to grow.
With its attractive foliage, fragrant flowers, and adaptability to various growing conditions, Decumaria Barbara is a valuable addition to woodland gardens, shaded borders, or naturalised landscapes, where it adds beauty, texture, and interest throughout the seasons.
