Cordyline Torbay Red, also known as ‘Cabbage Tree Torbay Red’ and a recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit,  is an erect palm-like evergreen garden tree or large shrub with gracefully arching narrow red leaves.  The more mature trees bear tiny, sweetly scented, creamy white flowers, the nectar from which acts as a magnet for the garden wild-life, in particular the honey bee.   These are followed by white or blue tinted berries.  Its striking architectural appearance make this plant an ideal focal point for any garden and often used as a dot plant within the shrub border.

Looking After Your Cordyline Torbay Red

Generally pest and disease free, a low maintenance evergreen plant suitable for many if not all locations.  It is an easy to grow ornamental garden shrub which will benefit from a sunny or semi-shaded area in all types of garden from cottage garden planting schemes , to more formal town gardens, also widely planted along our coastal areas.   The Cordyline prefers a fertile, well drained soil away from any very cold Winter winds and protection from the frost maybe required using fleece or a similar material or if planted in containers brought under cover or moved to a more sheltered position.
