Clematis armandii , also known as Armand Clematis, a recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit,  a vigorous evergreen climber, with leathery, glossy, trifoliate mid-green leaves unto 15cm long, the young growth emerging with bronze tones, making it an ideal climber for the pergola or covering for walls and fences. Early summer a profusion of sweetly scented, single, star shaped, white flowers are produced, a superb pollinator providing early nectar for the bees and other beneficial insects for the garden. Some protection from frost may be needed.

Looking After Your Clematis Armandii

Generally pest and disease free, although young shoots may be affected by aphids or caterpillars, an easy to grow evergreen climber in many if not all locations. A low maintenance climber for the garden which will benefit from a sunny or partially shaded area in all types of garden from informal cottage planting schemes to the more formal of town gardens. Very little pruning required, for any required to check spreading then cut back the over long shoots to healthy buds, or removal of damaged shoots is best done after flowering. Plant in a fertile, moist, but well drained soil, as with most types of Clematis the roots should be kept cool by shading from other plants close to its base or cover using gravel or an ornamental bark, in a sheltered position away from any very cold Winter winds. Apply a good quality Muti-purpose fertiliser early Spring to promote strong, healthy new growth during the coming season.
